This pretty Ringlet gave me occasions to look up its name.
I discovered that the eye-spot pattern distracts birds away from the head and onto the less vulnerable wing tips*.
The wonders of nature!
And, come to think of it: the wonderful curiosity of people who ask questions and find ways to answer (some of) them.
