Water for Wildlife

It’s been a while since I’ve introduced my wildlife pond project.

Meanwhile, we filled the lined hole with water, edged it with stone and turfs, planted native species into the margins and onto shelves at greater depth and added some native snails, tench and mussels to (hopefully) deal with the debris.

Now I’m keen to see the plants thrive and wildlife to colonise the new space.

I’m happy to see that, somewhat miraculously, pond skaters, dragon flies and water beetles arrived before a myriad of flies and midges decided this new habitat was created for them.

But even midges and flies have their purpose. In tonight’s twilight, bats circled and flitted, feasting on the new arrivals.

Happy days and nights!
