Darwin200 day 3: waiting for good conditions

Still in Liverpool, waiting for the weather conditions becoming more favourable tomorrow, we took the opportunity to analyse nutrients in the Mersey estuary.

Of course, taking one sample at one time in a very dynamic environment will tell us little about the water quality status of the Mersey.

What the young scientists on board learned today was more related to how to take, filter and analyse samples.

A quick view through the digital microscope shows us just how turbid the Mersey estuary is – not that we needed confirmation!

Water sample of Mersey estuary under the microscope: particles and no visible plankton.

And we discussed a wide variety of topics around how basic water characteristics can indicate processes that may be at work within the water.
